Is English Considered As Universal Language

         My name is Farah Nur Syanim Binti Fahmizam and I am a student of MARA Junior Science College Tun Dr Ismail. For today's blog, I would like to share about "Is English Considered As Universal Language?" and I will talk more about the importance of having good English language skills.

        As we all know, In today’s world, multilingualism is becoming more and more important. In addition to opening up employment opportunities, being able to speak a foreign language helps to make a real connection with people and to know more about diverse cultures, places and lifestyles. Many international businesses conduct meetings in English, universities teach courses in English and, around the world, tourists and travelers use English as a common language.

        But how did English become so important? Well, it all goes back to the British Empire, which at its peak covered 25% of the earth’s surface. During colonial times, British rulers often obliged the people in those countries to speak English rather than their native language. Although the origins of English as a global language has a complicated past, the language has left an important mark on media, trade and business. If you’re still not sure about whether to learn the language, then check out the reasons below.

1# IMPORTANT

First of all, studying English can help you get a job. English is the language of science, aviation, computers, diplomacy, and tourism. Many companies around the world have an international presence or are trying to expand on a global scale. This makes the necessity of a universal language such as English is more important. In these multi-national corporations, communication is a critical skill essential for enabling company operations and the ability to speak English fluently makes you more employable. By learning English or developing your English language skills, you will have access to a greater number of career opportunities.

When you learn English or any other globally popular language, you are able to connect and converse with a much larger network of people. Once you communicate with people from diverse backgrounds, you get exposed to new ideas and different ways of thinking. Being a multilingual person sharpens your skills and increases your value in workplace.

English is currently the language of the internet. It’s not immediately obvious why there’s such a gap between the languages users speak and the content available online. It does make sense that English would have started out pretty far ahead; the internet’s early history is heavily based in the United States. It’s estimated that in the 1990s, 80% of content online was in English. The amount of English content has indeed decreased a huge amount since then, but it’s still holding strong, comprising over half of all the stuff on the internet. The lasting dominance of English may reveal a more structural bias for the English language on the internet.

Almost all of the biggest companies on the internet are English-first. Google, Amazon and Facebook are all based in the United States, and so English is always the first priority. This isn’t to say that internet companies haven’t made strides to be inclusive of the world’s languages. But still, that means there are people who have to make decisions about which languages are worth investing resources in.

3# IMPORTANT

English is also one of the most studied language all across the world, most of the countries teach it as a second language from primary school until high school. As we all know, English is without a doubt the actual universal language. It is the world's second largest native language after Chinese, the official language in 70 countries. English can be understood at almost everywhere among people. It is the world media language, and the language of cinema, TV and the computer world. Most of the people all over the planet people know many English words, their pronunciation and meaning. The statistic below shows the most spoken language in the world.

English language is one of the simplest and easiest natural languages in the world. The only other simple and easy languages are the constructed ones. Even though each language have each difficulties to learn either the pronunciations or vocabulary but, it depends on which language you know already. However the concept of simplicity is undeniable. English in an easy language to learn, understand and speak. Even some of the other subject will be teach in English to improve the usage of English in other subject by using the correct term.

4# IMPORTANT

It is not only English is so important in business, in education either for communicating with people from different countries. But, English is a main language in the world of entertainment.Entertainment according to Cambridge Dictionary means shows, films, television or other performances or activities that entertain people or a performance.

People always said that English is the language of entertainment. It is referred to as the language of Hollywood. Everyone knows that Hollywood is in the United States, and that the biggest television and music industries in the world are based there. As I mentioned above, TV and movies are a great way to practice your English once you start learning. What's more, knowing English opens up thousands of movies, television shows, and games for your enjoyment. This is the chart that shows top worldwide movies from box office records.

This evidence shows that the United States that uses English has more famous movies than other countries.  If you want to work in the entertainment industry, English is essential. Many of the world’s top films, books and music are published and produced in English. Therefore by learning English you will have access to a great wealth of entertainment and will be able to have a greater cultural understanding.

5# IMPORTANT

When you know English, travelling will be much easier and your journey will be much smoother. We can took a simple example by a situation faced by a man that travel from German to Thailand with his family. When he reached the destination at Thailand, they would surely go and find the hotel as their first destination there and of course the receptionist or customer services would talk in English to talk with the foreigner tourist right? Maybe some of you will said that there must be any other language that the receptionist know right? It is not possible to just know one language as a receptionist. And my answer is yes. Of course they have knew a few languages such as their native language which is Thai, maybe Chinese and Vietnamese because the language is from the nearest country from Thailand and the tourist should not be mad to the receptionist for not knowing their languages because it is just impossible to remembered and be fluent on 7 000 languages from all over the world. So, what will happen to the man that from German earlier if he and his family doesn’t know English? They will get a huge loss on money, time and energy. So from the situation given, it is proved that learning English is important and English is considered as a Universal language.
